While Viagra and Cialis used for treatment of impotency is very efficient in curing erectile dysfunction, however using the same with certain diseases may have the probability of several harms. These harms includes some minor side effects which remains for some time but if they persists for a longer duration, then it is necessary to consult a physician immediately as delay may cause any major hazards. Patient having other diseases like heart attack should avoid using impotence drugs as using them may lead to several dangerous conditions as discussed above. A small study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology also associate the risk of optical nerve damage in patients having diseases like high blood pressure and heart problems.
So the medical experts who are engaged in prescribing generic Viagra drugs should warn the patients first about any upcoming potential risk that may affect them. The findings of optical nerve damage were based on a study including 76 men who attended one US eye specialist. Half of them were with optical nerve damage classified as non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION has very typical findings of vision loss which is noticed upon awakening. The most commonly affected from optical nerve damage are the older people and the age ranges from 40 years onward with up to more than 6,000 people in US reported victims every year. This is also a noticeable factor that one from every four victims suffered this disease in both eyes.
These men were divided in to two halves for purpose of comparison; all of them were similar with respect to their age, race and life style. All were asked to provide history of their lifestyle, medication details and also asked which drug was prescribed for erectile dysfunction. This small study concludes that mostly the affected victims of optical nerve damage were using the impotence drugs. The people having heart diseases or high blood pressure were subjected to 10 times more damage than the other people.
Though the study includes only few patients and very smaller in nature but suggested the cause of tissue damage resulted as the drugs used may have reduced the blood flow to the anterior optical nerve. So the fact could be easily confessed that use of these drugs may increase the risk of NAION in those who are subject to vascular disease. Some victims of such severe loss of vision or impaired eyesight due to Viagra or Cialis have also filed suit against the manufacturers.
Pfizer, manufacturers of Viagra have refused to accept the fact and as per them there were no symptoms of NAION recorded in their research trials before it was being licensed for production, and that the cases reported as of now may be
